Towards non-invasive Wilson’s disease progression monitoring based on corneal copper content

چکیده
Abstract Patients suffering from Wilson’s disease accumulate copper in their body. Copper load may become visible as Kayser-Fleischer (KF) rings - colorful copper-sulfur granules the base of cornea. Reoccurrence KF patients under anti-copper medication be a sign for ineffective treatment. This work proposes hand-held sensing system based on infrared reflectivity measurement cornea potential method regular at-home progression monitoring. The intensity LEDs used is safe operation human eye. As proof concept, was measured when placing sensor onto samples white paper that had tape different sizes centered within sensitive area. Further, determined solutions sulfate saline were poured into adapter bowels fitting head, with Cu2+ concentrations deducted literature. While prototype can to differentiate between two strips 6 and 12 mm2 or larger, measuring principle would needed also determine concentration solutions. Since these in-vitro models cannot fully represent complex in-vivo molecular conditions patients’ corneas, additional measurements eyes are necessary evaluate proposed system.

The trace element copper is vital to the healthy functioning of organisms. Copper is used in a multitude of cellular activities including respiration, angiogenesis, and immune responses. Like other metals, copper homeostasis is a tightly regulated process. Copper is transported from dietary intake through the serum and into cells via a variety of transporters. There are a variety of copper chap...
متن کاملTowards Non-Invasive Monitoring of Hypovolemia in Intensive Care Patients
Hypovolemia caused by internal hemorrhage is a major cause of death in critical care patients. However, hypovolemia is difficult to diagnose in a timely fashion, as obvious symptoms do not manifest until patients are already nearing a critical state of shock. Novel non-invasive methods for detecting hypovolemia in the literature utilize the photoplethysmogram (PPG) waveform generated by the pul...
متن کاملResearch on Non-invasive Eye Tracking Using Corneal Reflex
As the existed eye tracking devices are so complex that the restrictions on the position are too many and people have to wear special equipment, this paper introduces a novel method against eye tracking: using the five near-infrared light as the source of corneal reflex. With the help of our method, people won’t need any equipment against eye tracking. Our method is able to adapt to the natural...
متن کاملTowards Non-Invasive Diagnostic Imaging of Early-Stage Alzheimer’s Disease
One way to image the molecular pathology in Alzheimer's disease is by positron emission tomography using probes that target amyloid fibrils. However, these fibrils are not closely linked to the development of the disease. It is now thought that early-stage biomarkers that instigate memory loss are composed of Aβ oligomers. Here, we report a sensitive molecular magnetic resonance imaging contras...

The blood brain barrier (BBB) is one of the factors hampering the development of new therapies and in many cases limits the access of the therapeutic agent to the neural tissue. The BBB consists of a specialized vascular structure formed by the interaction between endothelial cells and numerous processes of astrocytes regulating the passage and diffusion of molecules between plasma and the cent...
